Our Story

Gift Card Bank was founded in February 2020 in response to COVID-19. Since then we have onboarded a team of 20+ volunteers to build out our platform and partnerships. Our mission is to improve well-being and financial security by supporting people through their time of greatest need.

Why gift cards?

We asked ourselves the same thing. Turns out, gift cards are an incredibly
effective way to provide support. Here's why:


Direct cash transfers work. Gift cards allow for much of the same flexibility as cash giving with the transparency of targetted giving.


The Multiplier Effect: we purchase gift cards in bulk on discounted terms, so every donor dollar goes further than it would with a direct cash transfer.


Access and convenience: we make gift cards available 24/7/365 to people in need.


Massive opportunity: There is a $95bn annual US gift card market with $3bn unused. We're building long-term partnerships with grocers and retailers to maximize impact.


We're providing COVID emergency relief to support thousands of families. Our goal is to prevent financial shocks from causing devastating negative spirals. We're just getting starting.
